Feather mites are most easily seen with the naked eye by transilluminating the feathers. Feather mites are not blood sucking mites. Feather mites are similar in some ways to house dust mites. I suspect these feather mites can spread some infections such as PBFD but don't know if this has been proven. Feather mites in budgies are usually easily eradicated with 3-4 treatments as shown below at 2-4 week intervals of each bird in the aviary.
