If it answers ping then check the availability of smtp (port 25) and pop( port 110) services by using "telnet name_of_mail_server 25" (or 110 depending on what service requires verification). For pop u have to type username: nameofuser and afterwords password:something... i do not know the exact steps (i used it only once or twice).
