There are multiple reasons for a jam, and each one is dealt with in a different way. The most common with the M16 is caused by failure of the bolt to cycle and chamber the next round. Early models did not have the plunger assist on the side of the receiver, and it was added to give the bolt a shove forward when you hit it with the palm of your hand. Another type of jam might be caused by the gas tube being fouled, and a good cleaning should correct it. A jam caused by a separated cartridge case is more serious, and it must be cleared from the chamber before the weapon will fire.
