two ways. one is to connect to xbox live on your xbox and it will automatically install the latest updates. the other is to go on xbox.com and search for 'backwards compatibility'. follow the instructions from there.
if it is a Normal Xbox game and you want to play it on the xbox you may need to manually update your xbox
if you have a hard drive you can play the xbox game's
Microsoft maintains a list of titles that are forward compatible with the Xbox 360. If the title you are trying to play does need an update to play that update will be applied when you first launch the game assuming that your Xbox 360 is connected to the internet.

No it will not. A Game disc will only be messed up by being scratched or otherwise made difficult to read. A PS3 game disc is not rewritable and the information on it is not changed. When an update for a game is released that information is stored in the Harddrive. If you update a game in your harddrive and take it to a friend's to play the update stays with your harddrive and you need to update it again at your friend's house. If you put the game in an Xbox 360 it will not change the game disc, unless you scratch it. There is no point in putting any PS3 game disc in a Xbox 340 they will not play ever
You can play many regular Xbox games on the Xbox 360.
