Use it's (with the apostrophe) only when you mean "it is" or "it has."

For example:

It's time to go. (It is time to go.)

It's been a long time. (It has been a long time.)

Use its (without the apostrophe) as the possessive of the word "it." One way to remember this is that the words "his" and "hers" don't have apostrophes and neither does "its."

For example:

That is its true nature.

Its properties are not well known.

Its colors are beautiful this time of year.

---

The only correct use of it's is as a contraction of it is (or it has)

Examples

  • It's cold today.
  • It's a new idea.
  • It's unusual to see cats swimming.

"Its" is possessive, describing something that belongs to It, as in "Its shadow".

"It's" is a contraction of "it is" or "it has", as in "It's not there", "It's your fault", or "It's Monday".

The word its is the possessive adjective, as pronouns do not use an apostrophe S.

The dog wagged its tail. As the car passed, he saw that its license plate was missing.

The apostrophe form is a contraction, meaning "it is."

The dog is barking because it's hungry. It's raining.

All contractions for "is" use an apostrophe S, and are often followed by another verb form, or by an adjective. Possessives like its, his, and her must be followed by a noun or noun form.
