Makes a great layer between hamburger patties, or covering foods that spatter when heating them up in a microwave oven. Restaurants often wrap Hamburgers or Sandwiches in wax paper ... it's great for storage applications, too.
Wax paper is commonly used in baking, because it is highly non-stick. When baking something like cookies, it is good to use on top of a pan. You don't have to grease or flour the pan, the cookies won't stick, and you can trow it away afterwards. Placing wax paper under a cake when putting on the icing allows for easy removal without a lot of mess, too. Wax paper is very inexpensive and can be found in most any grocery store, supermarket, baking store, and many arts stores, too.

Waxed paper can be used again provided it did not have raw meat on it previously. Other substances may just wipe off the waxed paper allowing it to be used again.

Butcher paper is usually white and waxed on both sides. Butcher paper (non-waxed) is commonly used for arts and crafts, and as a form of plain wrapping paper.
