Need to check coil wire, coil, The most common thing that does this is the ingnetion Module in the distributor. It bolts inside the Dist. and that is what the electric wires on the side of Dist. hook to. I think the module will fix your problem.
Remove the distributor cap, Then you will see some wires going to the side of the distributor. Those wires are pluged into the module. There are 2 small screews that hold the module in the dist. remove them and unplug the wire connectors, And you will have the module in you hand.
wire that as number one or pull dist. and fix.
Follow the wire from the #1 cylinder to the cap. see link
Is Dist. turning? Voltage tester start at one end or the other and make sure there's power. Wire to coil grounded. Pickup in distributer. Electrical is always interesting.
Make sure there is the correct voltage going to the dist. On yours I think you should have about 8 volts not 12. There should be a resistor wire to cut the voltage down. Probably lack of die electric grease under the mounting surface of the module. This special grease keeps the module cool & lack of it could cause the module to overheat & burn out.
Check your frame ground Check the pickup coil and module in the dist. Also the crank sensor . goodluckJoe Check for a broken wire in one of the cluster of plugs on top of the left wheelwell.
It will be a tan wire with a black stripe that breaks out of the wireing harness on the fire wall but close to the dist.
standing on the passengers side of the car and looking at the dist. it is the bottom right. From there you wire the the cap clockwise
There should be a mark or a ``1`` on the cap to tell you.
The ignition relay should be that cylindric looking device connecting the dist. cap to the cars other electrical systems. Check the middle wire coming from the dist.
There should be a sticker on the fan shroud telling you which wire to disconnect. On the older tbi motors it was tan with a black stripe i believe. Disconnect this wire, the loosen the dist. bolt and check the timing with a timing gun. Rotate the dist. until you get the desired timing then tighten the dist. bolt and connect the tan wire. On a vortec engine you have to have a engine scanner to adjust the timing. But if there is no check engine light on then the timing is correct all ready. It is controled by the computor, There is no ajustment needed.
