You need to work the muscles in the fore arm. The best exercise that I have ever done, I learned from a Baseball player. Tie a weight to the end of a string. Drill a hole through a piece of wood and attach the string. Then, using your hands, roll the string around the piece of wood by rolling it up with your hands. You should see that "knot" on the elbow contracting up and down. You will also work your fore arm at the same time.

How do muscles work in pairs to bend and straighten the arm?

While one muscle contracts, the other muscle in the pair returns to its original length. The main muscle that bends your upper arm is called the Biceps brachii. The action is called flexion at the elbow. This muscle is on the "front" of the arm. The muscle that acts against this one is called the Triceps brachii. Its' action is extension at the elbow. This muscle is on the "back" of the arm. See the link below:

What other than the tricep muscles do tricep curls work?

I don't believe that triceps curl is the correct term, as the triceps serve to extend the elbow joint rather than flex it. Triceps extensions, on the other hand, are generally used to train the triceps group, but they also benefit a rather small muscle, located almost on the elbow, called the anconeus. The function of the anconeus is to assist the main elbow extensors, the triceps, and to stabilize the elbow when the arm is straight.
