How do you write an essay about a specific topic?

Start by making a list of ideas:

• If your topic is something that you can look up - look up facts using a dictionary, an encyclopedia, or a search engine like Google or dogpile - list each fact that you find
• If your topic is an idea (like friendship or family) - write down everything you know about this idea - if you can't think of anything, then look it up just like the above!
• If your topic is a statement or quote - make certain that you understand what the statement or quote means! Look it up if you have trouble, or ask the teacher to help you understand it better. Write down any facts you know about the statement, or write ideas that you have when you think about the statement
• If your topic is to describe something - list everything you can think of - use all of your senses, not just sight
• If your topic is to tell what happened during an event - list everything that happened in order, from beginning to end
• If your topic is to give your opinion - give your opinion! List everything you think about the topic and why you believe that.

Next, make each line into a complete sentence. Check your grammar and punctuation to be sure they are correct.

Copy these sentences into a paragraph. Try putting them into different order to be sure that your paragraph makes sense and leads the reader from one idea to the next.

The best way to do a writing assignment is just to start writing!

List facts that prove the topic. Explain what the topic means to you. Describe everything that you can.

One trick is to mentally change your topic sentence into a question - if each of your sentences "answers" that question, then they are fully supporting it.

• If your teacher has given you a specific topic, the first thing you should do is make a list of everything you know about that topic. Do some research if you need to!

For the first step, don't worry about complete sentences and grammar - just write down your ideas. This can be either an informal list or a more formal outline.

If you are writing about a person, list facts about their life. If you are writing about a place or thing, list facts that you have looked up.

If your topic is more general, like "The Flag" or "Friendship," write down anything that comes into your mind when you think of that thing. If you are writing about an event, like "My Vacation" or "A Trip to the Airport," list everything that happened.

If your teacher has given you a phrase or proverb as a topic (like "Give Love, Get Love" or "A Stitch in Time Saves Nine") then you first must be sure you understand what the phrase means! • Write the introductory paragraph using the assigned topic as your thesis or topic statement. Explain what you are going to show about this topic in your essay.
  
• Now, make each fact you have listed into a complete sentence. For each fact, write two or three more sentences explaining that fact. These will be your paragraphs. Try different ways of putting them in order in the essay until you decide which way works best to get your ideas across - it does not really matter what order you use unless the teacher has said to do it a specific way!
• Write your concluding paragraph, in which you show that each of your facts supported or explained the topic.
