In order to win a U. S. Presidential Election, one must receive the votes of at least 270 of the 538 electors, or, in the event that no candidate receives at least 270 votes, one must receive the votes of at least 26 of the 50 states in the subsequent election performed by the U. S. House of Representatives. On January 6, the U. S. Vice President makes an announcement confirming the winner of the election after the official counting of the votes.

He/She just wins a simple majority of the popular votes in that state.

The great majority of states use the winner-takes-all system. Whichever ticket (presidential candidate and his/her running mate) gets the most popular votes from that state's voters gets 100% of the state's electoral votes. The exceptions are Maine and Nebraska. In each of those states the winners of the statewide popular vote get two electoral votes, and each of the other electoral votes goes to the winners of the popular vote within each congressional district (the number of electors each state may appoint is always two more than the number of congressional districts in the state).

270 electoral votes are required to be elected. To win, a candidate must win some combination of states whose electoral votes total 270 or more. In 2012, the majority of the voters in many of the states seem to have made up their minds a long time ago, but there are some states where neither candidates appears to have a clear majority. Candidates try to make a special effort to win these states as well as to keep their leads in the friendly states. Some of the states where the election is expected to be close in 2012 are OH,CO,FL,IA and WI.
