A virus can be attached to a spam email, camouflaged as a benign file download, or concealed in HTML or Javascript code on a website. All that needs to happen for the virus to propagate is for someone to click the file and open it. Worms don't even require that much action.
People that run Windows operating systems are susceptible to infestations that travel through security holes in Microsoft products. In fact, any software that connects to the Internet is vulnerable to attack. Many companies create patches in their update files, therefore you want to make sure automatic updates are turned on. There are other optional updates that don't always get downloaded and you have to visit the Microsoft update website or your Windows Update program to obtain these by hand selecting them.
