There are two fundamental principles of democracy: the majority rules, but the minority still has rights. The latter part is often ignored, however (as, for example, when the majority of voters in the state of California decided to deny same-sex couples the right to marry, after the courts had correctly ruled that same-sex marriages must be allowed, in order to give equal rights to everyone).
