Gate valve is basically created for an on-off service, it is designed to control the pressure drop and allow the passage of a pipe-cleaning pig. Gate valve can be also called as knife valve or slide valve.

If the Gate Valve is closed but filled with water (or other non-compressible fluid), the pressure in the space between the discs would increase very rapidly IF:

Both the upstream and downstream seats shutoff tightly (without any leakage).

The Valve were heated before the trapped fluid was allowed to escape

This means if this Gate Valve cannot be heated without opening it first, the hole is not necessary. This problem is more likely to occur when the inlet pressure decays rapidly trapping high pressure fluid (non-compressible) in the bonnet cavity. Note, the hole renders the Gate Valve to become uni-directional. For it to be bi-directional, an external line with Globe Valve can be furnished.

Gate valves are used in many industrial applications including the oil and gas industry, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, automotive, and marine.

Non-rising stem gate valves are very popular on ships, in underground applications, or where vertical space is limited because they don't take up extra space. Gate valves can be used in demanding environments such as high temperature and high pressure environments. They are often seen in power plants, water treatments, mining, and offshore applications.

Gate valves are used whena straight-line flow of fluid and minimum restric-tion is desired. Gate valves are so named becausethe part that either stops or allows flow throughthe valve acts somewhat like the opening orclosing of a gate and is called, appropriately, thegate. and also in liquid industries.

A screw drives a small 'gate' over the water inlet, closing off the flow. Gate valves are very old fashioned, hard to use, impossible to tell easily if on or off and in general very easily corroded or damaged. -Ball valves are definitely the way to go and for years I have been fitting one everywhere I find a gate valve.

Gate valves are used in all types of applications including wastewater plants. A gate valve is a valve designed to completely stop liquid flow or open to allow unrestricted liquid flow.
