Best Answer

Music is copyrighted automatically; there is no process through which the artists needs to go. That goes for anything anyone creates; a doodle in the back of a notebook is protected under copyright laws. However, to challenge someone in a legal setting for violation of copyright there must be evidence that the challenger came up with the idea in question before the person they are challenging.

If you want to have evidence to help you in any future copyright cases, one way is to post a copy of the work to yourself, leaving the envelope sealed when it arrives. The date on the postmark and the unbroken seal on the envelope is incontrovertible evidence. It is important to label the outside of the envelope clearly before you post it so you know what is inside.
