a lot healthier for sure! Yes, for the most part the ancient Roman food was much healthier in some respects as their diet consisted of a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. These items are available for the American diet if Americans chose to use them. The Americans have a choice of the type of foods that they consume, such as "healthy eating" or "convenience foods". The Romans did not have this choice. All their foods were freshly made, even the items purchased at the food bars on the street. Remember too, in comparing ancient foods to modern foods, that types of food and tastes are different. The Romans nearly always smothered their foods with the famous (or infamous) "garum" which was a fermented fish sauce. American tastes definitely do not run to this type of dip. Also the Romans had no tomato based foods as we have in pasta sauces, pizzas, some soups and stews.
