How are bacteria economically important?

Bacteria are important because they produce a community's food chain and a type of gas called methane. They recycle nutrients, help bread rise, make alcohol, and help make yogurt and cheese. You would die without bacteria in your body. Some plants could not fix nitrogen and thrive without bacteria.

Why are nitrogen-fixing bacteria contributions to the nitrogen cycles so important?

The air is about 80% nitrogen- but cannot be used by plants for food. Nitrogen fixing bacteria transform nitrogen in the air to nitrogen in the soil that plants CAN use- resulting in greatly improved plant growth, and more fertile soil.

How does bacteria get there food?

EXTRACELLULAR DIGESTION Bacteria ( and fungi) consume food by excreting enzymes that digest the food material outside of the bacteria. The result is small(ish) molecule ( compared to the original fod material) that can be absorbed into the bacteria thru the cell wall and membrane ( no mouth!) Heterotrophic bactera are saprobes (they absorb dead organic material like rotting flesh). Some of these parasitic bacteria kill their host while others help their host. Autotrophic bacteria make their own food, either by photosynthesis (which uses sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make food) or by chemosynthesis (which uses carbon dioxide, water and chemicals like ammonia to make food - these bacteria are called nitrogen fixers and include the bacteria found living in legume roots and in ocean vents).
