Commercially made Sour cream is a dairy product rich in fats made by adding bacteria derived from lactic acid to pasteurized cultured cream, letting the bacteria to grow until it sours and thickens the cream. then it is re-pasteurized to stop the process. It is soured by the addition of a starter culture similar to those used in yogurt and soft cheese manufacturing
It doesn't.

But lactic acid Bacteria DOES make cream sour through fermentation, making it thicker also. Lactic Acid is a key ingredient in all drinks and food products which contain heavy amounts of milk and Lactose (The sugar in milk)
Here's a helpful hint to the person who answered above:
This is a Questions and Answers site, unless you know your research and answers down to a tee then don't answer. Some people have allergic reactions to specific types of bacterium (For example Penicillin, a bacterium cultivated from mold in Oranges in order to be used as an antibiotic can often be deadly to people who are allergic to it) Not giving people the correct answers not only means you are not informing them but potentially placing them in harms way.
Yes. 4 cups cream 1/4 cup buttermilk Mix into a non metal container, let sit for about 24 hours in a warm enviroment.
It contains much more lactic acid than most dairy products. Acids are what cause a sour taste.
No. Dangerous bacteria have developed inside the unopened package.
Real sour cream is the result of the controlled growth of bacteria in cream. Some manufacturers add food starch and gums to make the product cheaper and perhaps more stable. Read the ingredient statements to see what is in the sour cream you buy.
It is sour... at least compared to regular cream. Lactic acid bacteria ferment part of the natural sugars in the cream into lactic acid, which is called "souring" and does result in a mildly sour taste.
sour cream is a dairy product which is rich in proteins obtained by fermenting a regular cream by certain kinds of lactic acid bacteria
lactic acid bacteria makes cream sour through fermentation
no!!
Well, to make sour cream, I dont know. But to make yogurt is Bacteria. "Yogurt production demonstrates fermentation by Streptococcus thermophilum and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. Heated milk is inoculated and maintained at a given temperature causing bacteria to grow and ferment lactose, the sugar in milk. The bacteria produce lactic acid which causes the milk to coagulate and adds a sour flavor." (from www.uwrf.edu/biotech/workshop)
Lactobacillus :found in butter milk, yogurt, sour cream.

Through a fermentation process. A good example would be to find a recipe using sour cream; it will probably explain how to make the cream sour. If a recipe calls for sour cream (or sour milk) add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar and leave until it sours. You can also buy sour cream at the supermarket.
