Cells obtain both oxygen and nutrients from the blood. If the blood did not circulate, then the oxygen and nutrients would become depleted in most parts of the body. The lungs would still have plenty of oxygen, but it would not be distributed to all the other parts of the body, and the liver might contain lots of nutrients, but they would remain in the liver.
