How does the clutch work?

An explanation on how a clutch works in a car is to transfer power from the engine to the gear box.

How do you jump start a older dirt bike?

Assuming it has a clutch, the following manual method should work. 1. Switch the ignition on, put the bike in first gear, and hold the clutch in. 2. Push the bike along or roll it down a hill till you are at about running speed. 3. Carefully let out the clutch, the engine should start. Alternativly you can use jumpleads and another bike to jumpstart it using the battery of the second bike. I don't recommend you use a car unless the battery sizes are similar.

How do you work a clutch?

Basically you start your bike up and you should be in neutral, pull in the clutch lever. If its a bike usually u push down on the shifter which should be on your left next to your peg. If its an ATV u click it up now at this point rev your bike to around 1/4 the throttle then, very slowly let the clutch go and you should move forward ( It takes a couple of times ) meanwhile pull the throttle to about half way if you feel like your bike is getting loud, pull in the clutch and click your shifter up, you should be in second gear now, unlike when you were in first gear, let go of the clutch completely, your clutch is now fully engaged and if you're pulling on the throttle you're probably accelerating (If your not your bike has some problems). Repeat the process if you would would like to keep going faster. If you would like to stop I suggest you pull in the clutch and shift into first gear and use your brake until you come to a complete stop ( Or one or two mph ). If your stopped give it the same process as stated above. If you would like to slow dorw only slightly just pull in the clutch and don't touch the shifter ( This is best used for turning ).

Can you start a motorcycle without a battery?

You could try this & it might work: Keep the ignition key in the "On" position, Press the clutch lever & get into 1st gear. Then run with your bike while keeping the cluth pressed. When you hear the engine splutter, let go of the clutch & hop onto yr bike & keep accelerating. Be careful not to lose balance when you are running with the bike, make sure you don't run into people or slip on sand. With some practice, you'll manage it.

What are basic bike repair tools?

Wrenches and hex screwdrivers are the most basic of tools you will need to work on any bike. Investing in a bike holding and lifting mechanism is also recommended.

What would cause low gear not work on 13 double over?

On a 13-speed double over, if your low gear will not work, particularly when climbing hills, there is likely a problem with your transmission or shifter. Many times the problem is seen where low gear will not work and high gear will, indicating a problem with the mechanism.

I have a Toyota MR2 i was on the hwy going about 70mph i turned off the exit pushed in my clutch to put it in a lower gear and there was no clutch till i pumped it why?

You may have a hydrolic clutch. One that takes fluid to make it work, check your clutch fluid.

How does a stern drive work?

It is a fairly basic transmision. A locking mechanism (clutch dog) is moved by a cable amd a lever to change from forward gear to reverse, with a neutral inbetween. It is linked to the throttle cable so you can't jam it in reverse while the engine is at full rpms.

How do you work a clutch on a sreet bike.?

Shifting is all done on the left side of the bike. Your left hand works the clutch. Your left foot works the shifter. The shifter is geared up to a slotted barrel. When you push down it shifts down one gear at a time. And likewise when you lift up on the shifter with your foot it shifts up one gear. Most bikes have five gears. A few really fun bikes have six. Neutral is half way between first and second gear. To start out from neutral, pull in the clutch lever with your left hand. Push down on the shifter with your left foot. Now slowly let out the clutch till the bike begins to move. Now slow down your release and give a little gas. Once your movement becomes stable you can release the clutch the rest of the way out. To shift into second, you pull the clutch in, pull up on the shifter with your left foot, and let the clutch out with your left hand again. Next you push your right fore arm under the throttle while gently gripping it with your right hand and expose your teeth and open your eyes wide.

What is the difference between a gear and brake?

A brake shows the car/bike down until it comes to a hult/stop. A gear changes the speed the engine works at depending on what type of road you are driving on and the speed limits. If you are asking about a bike then the gear's change the speed at which you pedal at, gear 7 on a bike makes you pedal slower but you have to push harder down on the pedals, however gear 1 on a bike makes you have to pedal faster and more genitally on the pedals, - both gears really work your muscles... so if you have a bike with gears up to 7 stay on 3 or 4! Gear box = what you use to change the gears on a car. Handle bar = what you use to change the gears on a bike.

How do you operate a motorcycle?

A motorcycle can seem like a daunting proposition to ride at first but it will soon become as easy as riding a bicycle. First I'd recommend having someone who knows how to ride a motorcycle there to teach you. Beyond that the first thing to do is hop on and get used to controls. The lever on the left hand is the clutch and controls the power of the engine reaching the rear wheel. The lever on your right is the front wheel brake. The right hand handlebar grip is the throttle and it rotates counter clockwise, basically when opening the throttle your wrist should go down. The right foot lever is your rear wheel brake. The left foot lever is the gear changer. The next step is to make sure all the levers are within easy reach and not awkward to use, especially the foot levers, if they cannot be adjusted then make sure you are at least comfortable with using them. The next item is setting the bike in neutral, assuming its not an automatic. Push the gear lever down several times then push it up once gently. Take the bike off its stand and push it forwards or backwards. If the rear wheel locks then it is still in gear and the above step needs to be repeated. Now get on the bike and it's time to start the bike. Put up the kickstand and turn on the ignition, if the bike has a stop switch make sure it's set to run, if the bike has a fuel tap(old motorcycles) set it to on. Starting a motorcycle can be a bit of an art form, especially with a kickstart dirtbike. If its an electric start push down the start button and the engine should start, if not try twice more, if that doesn't work turn on the choke, again if your bike has one, dont leave the choke on once you've got the bike running. It should start. With a kickstart bike, flip out the kickstart lever and rest your foot on it, with most bikes it's easiest if your sitting on the bike. Push down on it until you feel it stop, the bike is now at top dead center, now kick down and the engine will turn over, beware of lashback, this may take several tries to get the bike started, if it's cold turn on the choke, again don't leave it on after the bike is warmed up or if you give up. Now you've got the bike running, experiment with the throttle a bit. The next step is to pull in the clutch and hold it there. Now push down on the gear change once. Slowly, and gently let out the clutch. You should feel the clutch start to bite and the bike will try and move forward and the engine will start to bog down, pull the clutch back in. Now that you've found the biting point give the bike a few more revs and try again and see if you can get the bike going. The key to a good launch is to be smooth and gentle, if you just dump the clutch, the bike will either stall(annoying) or wheelie off the line(terrifying and really hard to control). Now that you have the bike moving, just wander around and get used to all the controls. When you want to stop dont forget to pull the clutch in along with the brake. Don't let out the clutch, knock the gear lever gently, up one. This should put the bike in neutral, ease out the clutch. if it bites do it again. The next step is changing gears most bikes operate a one down, 5 up system, first gear is a down click, the rest are up. Dont worry about hitting neutral on the way up. the bike usually has to be stopped to get into neutral. To change up gear, pull the clutch in and click up then let the clutch out. To change down a gear, clutch in, click down and blip the throttle before letting out the clutch.

Shifting gears on a motorcycle?

To change gears you use your foot to operate the lever in front of the left footpeg. If you give it a few strong taps down till it will go no further that is first gear. Half a click up from there is nuetral. Click up hard again for 2nd gear, same action again for 3rd and so on. You should pull the clutch in when doing this although most bike gearboxes will still work even if you do not use the clutch.
