Immunization involves introducing dead/weakened germs into your body. The body can 'fight' this infection easily. Later, if you come across the same germ, the memory cells in your immune system recognize them and it produces antibodies faster than it would have if it were un-immunized.

Whenever a foreign particle that is an antigen(pathogen) enters our body our immune system recognize and kill the antigen.Usually our immune system takes time to recognize and kill the antigen,if the antigen is more strong within that time it can collapse the system and cause disease.During immunization we will be administered with a mild antigen which cannot cause disease but it can trigger the immune system hence the immune system can kill the antigen(pathogen) efficiently when its administered second time before causing the disease

What do you need to do for a epidemic?

You will have to tackle the problem in roughly three fronts. First is to isolate and treat the patients and close contacts. Second is to stop the spread the disease. Here you may have to tackle the vector or take care of water as in water born disease. Third is to to protect the target. Means to protect the healthy people from attack of infecting pathogen. Also by immunizing the by active immunization or by additional passive immunization in selected persons. This looks simple on paper. But to apply it is very difficult and needs co-operation and co-ordination of government and all the people in the society.
