Catholic Answer

According to Fr. Prummer's Handbook of Moral Theology paragraph 435, generally speaking magic is the art of producing surprising results through the use of occult means. In particular, black magic resorts to the aid of the devil [and demons]. Magic used in order to harm persons is termed sorcery.

Most modern practitioners of magic and its related arts do not realize that they are trafficking with demons but the evil is still very real, even if not intentional.

Witchcraft, as defined in Donald Attwater's A Catholic Dictionary is the exercise of preternatural powers possessed in virtue of an alliance with evil spirits, usually with the intention of injuring others. Again, the practitioners may not realize that they are trafficking with demons, and efforts have been made to "whitewash" both practices, which are not really two different practices, but two names for the same thing.

Did witches use black magic?

Firstly, there is no such thing as black magick. Magick is a tool, much like a hammer. With a hammer, you can build a house or tear one down. Same concept applies with magick. Magick is colorless, but the people who weld it give it its' intention. Second, The term "witch" means one who practices witchcraft or magick. So, if you take out the "black" in your question, then I can safely say, yes, witches use magick since the meaning of witch defines it as such.

What is the magic or witchcraft?

Well first off there is a difference between the two. Witchcraft is first and foremost a religion. Sorcery, like wizardry is the art of practicing magick. Through magick both witches and sorcerers try to change the outcome of any event by manipulating time, space, and nature. Unlike the witch though, a sorcerer can be of any religion. They can be a christian, a Jew, or a Muslim, and so on. A witch on the other hand can only be a witch if witchcraft is their religion.

How was witchcraft proved?

Many people are still sceptical, but magick (that's how most witches spell it) is basically the same thing as the Law of Attraction.

What kind of witchcraft is there?

There are *thosuands of Witchcraft traditions. Since there are so many, it is nearly impossible for me to name them all, but I can name some of the more popular forms. I could define them, but frankly I don't have that kind of time, so it is up to you to research them: *Wicca Gypsy Witchcraft Italian Witchcraft (aka Stragheria) (I may have misspelled that, though) Gardnerian Witchcraft (from which Wicca stemmed)Alexandrian Witchcraft (which stemmed from Gardnerian Witchcraft) Seaux-Wica (I may have misspelled this, as well) Witta Shamanism Indigineous Witchcraft (Witchcraft customs used by indiginous peoples... this form technically has no proper title.) Folk Magick (Folk Witchcraft) (May be spelled alternatively as Folk Magic)Ceremonial Magick (***Ceremonial Witchcraft) (May be spelled alternatively as Ceremonial Magic) and Traditional Witchcraft to name a few. * Often times customs and traditions may overlap somewhat, so this number is a rough estimate. ** Wicca, is an Earth-based neo-pagan religion that often incorporates Traditional Witchcraft and other forms of Magic into its general framework. ***Sometimes the term Ceremonial Witchcraft/Magic(k) refers to Ceremonial customs within Traditional Witchcraft.
