Computers communicate via computer networks. There are wired are wireless connections possible. A wired connectionneeds special cable from a computer to a router or to a cable modem. Wireless connection needs special wireless adapter in a computer and your computer must be in range of a wireless network (WiFi network or WiMAX network or mobile network).

Computer uses special protocols to communicate via networks. Most popular protocol is TCP/IP. internet uses TPC/IP.

Everything is electrical in the land of computers. Electric pulse on, this means 1 and no pulse, this means 0. It's called binary. You might be thinking "how does no pulse mean zero?", and that's due to the clock-speed, called Megahertz (Mhz) or Gigahertz (GHz) these days.

Every second, your computer's brain, the CPU expects to execute a certain number of instructions. This is the Mhz or Ghz, e.g.: my CPU is a 2.8Ghz. So, it's capable of executing 2.8 billion instructions per second (well, not exactly, but for this explanation, let's assume).

So, if no pulse is received during one of those 2.8 billion cycles, it's assumed it's a zero. 1's and 0's form a set of instructions and data that are meaningful to the computer.

So, not only does your CPU execute instructions at a certain speed, but the network also sends electrical pulses at a specific speed, Megabit, Gigabit, etc. Rather than these pulses being internal to the computer, the network instructions are sent wirelessly via radio-style interface, or via a wire.

So, just as the CPU expects electrical pulses at a certain time, so does the network. However, as the network is unreliable is some cases, it's expected that you need to form these pulses into a form called "packets", which is a bundle of instructions of a certain size. This allows the receiving computer to know which packets are received properly and those which need to be resent by the sender as they didn't arrive in the correct form.

So, once enough of these packets are received from the sender, they are reassembled into instructions, such as "Sender: I want to login to my email", "Receiver: Okay, send your username and password", "Sender: here it is", "Reciever: Okay, you're logged in. Here is your email".

Hope this helps,

Chay.

A computer talks to other computers by sending and receiving packets packets are little bits of info like if you sign in on a website the packet would have your logon and password in it. (thats one of the ways hackers get passwords) your computer sends 1000S of them a day (if you use it) if you are chating with someone in the packet it would say what you said to them

There are many types.

The most common form the general public is used to is by WAN.

(Wide Area Network) a good example of a WAN is the internet.

However, other common networking interfacing between computers can happen through LAN and WLAN. Caution though, some of these might not have access to an internet (WAN) point.

LAN = Local Area Network

WLAN = Wireless Local Area Network.

You can make sure you have a connection to another computer by hitting the START (windows key (if you have windows)) XP users click run then CMD. Vista and 7 users just type cmd and hit enter. Once in you can make sure you have a default gateway to the internet and/or network. This can be achieved by hitting "ipconfig /all" or "ipconfig" for basic information in the cmd. If it shows an IPv4 address you are connected to an Area Network.

By lan, two computers may be hooked up to one another. If your talking about the internet, then many computers connect to a server, much like a data base where individual computers "meet" each other and exchange and access information of other computers. Your paying Verizon or optimum because your using their server to connect yourself to other computers.

Answer #2

Computers communicate with each other using standard formats and protocols. Various organizations and groups define those standard. Some of those standards define hardware interfaces, like IEEE, RS-232, SATA, USB-2, the various WiFi protocols, USB-3, Firewire, etc. The data is exchanged using a standard protocol and character set. For example most web pages if HTML and ASCII characters. The network isself is just a set of standards that define the signal levels and what the signals will look like so both computers can recognize the information. SGML and XML are standards that allow computers to send data to each other. The define things like field starts here, contains this, end here, next field, next record, etc. Computers can also use hard copy, barcodes, magnetic tapes, disk drives exchanged between computers, any media that will hold the data and the computer has the ability to read or write.

Most of the time computers are physically connected as in the Internet but they can be connected using wireless, cellular and many other technologies as well. There is work being done for computers an devices to use lasers to communicate.
