Under current legislation, anyone who is providing personal care in a professional capacity must register with the appropriate authority and adhere to strict guidelines and regulations.
In England, carers are Regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), in Wales they are regulated by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate (CSSIW), in Scotland they are regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) and in Northern Ireland they are regulated by the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA).
These bodies all have strict requirements on the training a carer must receive, the procedures a carer must follow and the policies a carer must have in place.
