The Earth takes part in two types of rotation that cause obvious movements in the sky.

First the Earth rotates on its axis every 23 h 56 m, and in that time the entire sky rotates, making the stars appear to rise and set, but after 23 h 56 m all the stars get back to their same places in the sky.

Secondly, the Earth rotates round the Sun every 365¼ days, which gives us our year of 365 days, corrected by a leap year every 4 years which makes up the extra ¼ day (actually it's a bit less, so our calendar leaves out 3 leap years in every cycle of 400 years).

Because of our orbit round the Sun, it takes an extra 4 minutes each day for the Sun to get back to the same place in the sky, which is why the day is 24 hours instead of 23 h 56 m. The effect on the stars is that they appear to move about 1 degree to the east each night compare to the previous night, so through the year the stars rotate 366 times while the Sun rotates 365 times.

Rotation: Makes it seem that the Sun, the Moon and all stars move around once a day.

Revolution: Changes the relative position of Sun, compared to the stars. As a result, the same star will rise about 4 minutes earlier each day. (Actually, Earth's real rotation takes about 23h 56m; from one sunrise to the next, or from one noon to the next, takes a bit longer than a full rotation on average).

The Earth's rotation is towards the East.

That means the stars seem to revolve around the Earth once a day, from East to West.
