i used a half inch six-point socket, and a long (2ft or 2ft) extension. if you have a wobbleend on the extension, it will probably be easier. put the extension through the passonger side off the engine, follow under the header and there is a direct line of sight to the top bolt. you may just have to use several 6" extensions until you can find the fight length to work with
The bolt is stuck and can't seem to come off.
If you have removed the bolts holding it in place, lightly tap it with a hammer as it is stuck. Make sure you have removed the 2 bolts holding it. Thank you, There are two bolts and the top one has a nuts to tie up ground cable, obviously I just took the nuts off but not the bolt screw. After taking top bolt off, I could easily took starter out. R. Lin
The starter is located on the back side of the engine at the bottom. It has 1 top bolt and 2 bottom bolts. The battery and tray will have to come out to life it out the top. It can't come out the bottom because the power steering rack is in the way. Use a ratchet with a 10 inch extension and a socket to get the top bolt out.
I have worked on a 98 trail boss. You have to take off the fly wheel cover/recoil first. After that there are two or three bolts that will come out of the starter. there is a ground strap that is attached to the starter that needs to come off also.
Bad ground to the dash.
(Also valid for 1998 model. //Scott C.) 09 April 2006 - Installed a new starter yesterday. Starter has 2 bolts holding it on the motor. Lift the hood and take off the air filter box blocking the view of the top bolt of the starter. After disconnecting the battery cables, take out the top bolt of the starter. From under the van, disconnect the cables to the starter. Take out the bottom bolt of the starter and it will back out from the motor. Don't let it fall on you! These new starters cost around $150.00 so, if you take it to a shop that rebuilds them, you can save a lot of money and most likely have a better starter than a "new" one. Most cars come with a "heavy duty" starter and parts stores usually don't give you that kind of a quality starter in return. //Master Sgt. Charles W. M.
there are only 2 bolts one on top and one on the bottom assuming that you have removed the wires (there is a small 5mm bolt the holds a connection to the starter, the bolts that actually hold the starter on are 15mm i believe.
Starter is $102 at Advance Auto Part. Changing it is easy, but cumbersome to get to. Remove the battery, air intake cover, air intake box, and battery tray. Jack the car up on the drivers side so you can reach the underside bolt on the starter. Unbolt the wires on the starter and then proceed to take out the bolt on the underside of the starter. Then unbolt the top bolt. Starter will come out the top with a little force. Installation is opposite of removal. Don't forget to hook your ground wires back up!! Do this yourself and save money. Shop would probably charge you around $250-$300 to do this hour long job.
Ultimate Washer is the place to come for Honda small engine parts. ... If the recoil starter cord on your Honda engine breaks, don't take it to a local shop for repair. ... Starter Spring, SN-150-715 Recoil Flange Bolt, SN-140-401 Starter Handle ..
The starter will not come out until the primary is removed and the started shaft bolt as well. If you are mechanically inclined, i urge you to purcahse the reapir manual. It is your best friend when doing such repairs.
Try looking at the low beam fuse it may be blown. If no other lights come on it could be the switch.
I'm thinking the original 1969 engine block is drilled and tapped to except either starter depending on the application. The in-line bolt starter would come with the 2 speed powerglide or the "3 on a tree" standard transmissions using the smaller flywheel. The off-set bolt starter would be used with the bigger Turbo 400 or 4 speed standard transmissions using the larger flywheel.
