The world wide web is a network of interconnected computers.
These computers are either servers or clients.. The servers serve the webpages and the clients (us) access (or connect to servers to request the webpage) these webpages.
To put it simply, every computer that is connected to the internet is connected to every other computer connected to the internet. Imagine it like a huge city, millions of buildings, all connected by roads. Think of a website as a document. You would mail a request to the building that has the document you want, they would make a copy and mail it to you. You then have a copy of the document, which traveled via road. It works the same online, you sent a GET request via the cables, fibers, and phone lines that make up the internet, and once the computer (server) that has the website you want gets that request, they send you a copy.
Simply put, it was invented by and Englishman, Sir Tim Berners-Lee using a client server model of computer interconnections, where the servers are file stores where the files are encoded in HTML (a subset of the ISO standard markup language SGML) and the clients are applications capable of parsing the files into a user readable form. The two are then interconnected by a series of publicly facing Domain Name servers which tell users where these data stores are.
On top of this other people have provided search engines (eg Google) so that users can easily find out about and get at the content of the files stores.
The system works because it is not owned by any one company or country and the standards underpinning it are publicly published and maintained at no direct cost to the users of the system. It is "open source" and anyone can provide and set up a data source for it so it just grows and grows.
