The fort had three different owners. Built by the French and named Fort Carillon, it was renamed Fort Ticonderoga by the British when they captured it in the French and Indian War. In the Revolutionary War the Americans captured it from the British and used it as a base for their invasion of Canada.
The British defeated the French in 1777 meaning that the Americans won over Fort Ticonderoga. The British abandoned it in 1780.

As the American Revolutionary as unfolded, it was important for the American rebels to score some military victories against the British forces. In northeastern New York the British had a fort called Fort Ticonderoga. The Americans launched an attack on this British stronghold, and captured it in 1775. The American forces were led by Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen. As an aside, Arnold was one of the Americans; best generals. He decided to betray the Americans and help the British. Thus his name is now linked with the term "traitor".
