Then tighten the tensioner bolt till the belt has about 1/2 of give in the middle of the belt. I just found out that there is a consistent issue with Protoges and aftermarket alternator belts and proper fit. This was hard to do on my 86 2.5L 4 cylinder because in order to put the new alternator belt on... you have to get the other belt off... first what you have to do is loosen up the 2 pivot bolts on the AC compressor from underneath the car.. mine were pretty stubborn but i eventually got em to budge... once you can move the AC, remove the crank/water pump/AC belt. then loosen up the alternator pivot bolt located on the underside of the alternator...(this can be done from either top or bottom) once you can move the alternator.. slip the belt onto the alternator pulley and around the water pump and crank. then tighten the alternator pivot bolts while putting as much possible tension onto the belt and re-tighten alternator into place. then put or replace crank/water pump/AC belt and re-tighten the AC while putting as much possible tension on the belt by pushing the AC forward with a pry bar or screwdriver. good luck

to change the alternator belt, there is tow way. if the car is equip with a/c you need first to remove the a/c belt and then remove the alternator belt. both belt are put in place the same way, so you'll might have to do one or two. first, you have to untight the bolt over the alternator and let it in place. second, you have to untight the bolt under the alternator and let it in place. with your hands, you can rotate the alternator near the engine. once the belt is free, replace it with the new one. make sure the belt is place in the right pully slot and is correctly alligned. to tight the belt you will need to pry the alternator with a prybar. hold the tension with one hand and tight the bolt over the alternator with the oder hand. you can now stop prying and tight the bolt under the alternator. now check the belt tension. to have a good tension on your belt you can use a simple 12 inch wood rule (like in junior school) place the rule on the belt and with your hand pry the belt. for a proper tight strenght the belt should move about 1-2 inches. if its too tight the belt life will decrease and if it is to tight it will not rotate the alternator properly.

The belt you have to first remove is the power steering pump belt. Loosen the clamp bolt, then the adjusting screw on the power steering pump until the belt is slack enough to remove from the pulleys. If you have air conditioning, you will also need to remove that belt too, by the same method on the A/C compressor. You can now loosen the clamp bolt (12 mm) from the alternator as well as the retaining bolt (14 mm) on the alternator. Once loosen, swing the alternator towards the engine block and remove the belt from the pulleys. Cheers Malcolm
