The question should read, "...WAS it from...", as those two nations no longer exist. N & S Vietnam were divided at the 17th parallel in 1954; that parallel was officially a demilitarized zone (DMZ); meaning an area that was free of military activity. It extended from the ocean to the country of Laos, less than 50 miles. Either side of the DMZ, for about a mile separated the two nations of North & South VN. The most northern South Viet city was Dong Ha, which neighbored the town of Quang Tri, to it's south. North of Dong Ha, on a clear day, you could see the towers of the firebases Alpha 4 and Charlie 2; which were former US Marine firebase's called Con Thien by the Marines. At Alpha 4 & Charlie 2, rested the DMZ. Extending westward from those two firebases, was hostile territory. Below A-4 & C-2 was Highway 9 (QL-9) running east and west; mostly a single lane dirt road, turning to pavement when reaching Firebase Camp Carroll. West along Route 9 (Hwy 9/QL9) from Camp Carroll was the Rockpile and Khe Sanh, and Firebase Lang Vei (a Green Beret outpost which was over run by NVA PT76 light tanks in '68). Firebase Lang Vei was the last outpost, before crossing into Laos. North of Hwy 9 (Route 9/QL9) was all hostile territory (no friendly forces).
