AnswerHUGE. It was only when Hitler was confident he wouldn't have to fight a war on two fronts that he launched his bid for global dominance. With the division of Poland between them and only one front to manage (the West) this opened him up to the invasion of France and the failed invasion of Britian. It was only with his defeat in Britain that Hitler made the same mistake as Napoleon: he invaded Russia. Neither Stalin nor Hitler trusted each other and both were ready to stab the other in the back. Hitler obviously struck first however Stalin if he thought he was strong enough to defeat Hitler would have broken the pact first and invaded Germany. Stalin was simply trying to buy time to build his forces and stengthen his position while he turned Hitler on his Western capitalist foes. He wanted the Socialist (Nazi) and Capistalist (Allies) foes to bleed each other dry so he spread his communist influence into Europe and the world.

The Nazi-Soviet pact played a very big part of the cause of WW2. However lets not forget the amount of appeasement Hitler got, and the fail of the League Of Nations. The causes of the second world war mostly invovled Hitler for example him seeking empire.

the russians were also allowed to recover all the land they lost in the treaty of brest-litovsk, in return for supplying germany with oil and other vital commodities, e.g grain, iron ore.

-secretely, they also agreed to divide poland between them.

hitler realised that he would not be able to invade poland without getting the ussr on his side.

so on the 23rd august fascist germany and communist russia signed a non-aggression pact in which they promised not to attack one another.
