The Mitsubishi A6M or Zero had a speed of 330 mph at 15,000 feet altitude. It could exceed that speed by as much as 80 mph, but because of the brittle nature of the aluminum made at that time, any speeds above 400 mph could result in self destruction of the aircraft.
