Some Photo Reconnaisance versions of the Mosquito could exceed 425 mph. Some of these were used to fly unarmed to Sweden during WW2 to carry back cargoes of vital ball bearings.

The de Havilland Mosquito was a twin-engine two-seat fighter/bomber built by the British for service in World War 2. Featuring two of the superb Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 engines for thrust, the Mosquito was unique in that it was constructed almost entirely of wood.

Maximum speed varied with the model. However, the Mosquito B Mk XVI could reach a speed of 417 mph in level flight, placing it on a par with the American P-47 Thunderbolt and the German FW-190. Though the American P-51D could outrun it by about 20 mph, no service model of the vaunted Messerschmidt Bf-109 came close.
