The Motte and bailey castle was built by William de Warenne around 1070. This was a wooden tower on a motte (there were two mottes which is very unusual) This was replaced by a stone shell keep early in the 12th century. Domestic buildings were also built in the keep around this time. Two semi octagonal towers were added to the shell walls at this time. The last improvement in defence in 1350 was a barbican. Soon after this the castle was deserted and fell into disrepair.
