I think he changes by seeing everyone equal. He is in charge of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry and is so proud of all of them. When they are talking about the plan for taking over Fort Wagner. He volunteers his regiment because he feels they are stronger and better than anyone else even though no one else sees it. The regiment was origanally just supposed to be used for labor but he blackmail th eguy who was in charge and made him be able to let them fight or he would have been reported to the war department. And Colonel Shaw basically sacrafices himself for the men in the end. He really felt that he owed the men. They gave up their lives and freedom just to fight for him/ the country.
