Candidates successfully reach people online by using social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, online advertisements and other online means, rather than just television and radio and many others.
As the internet advances and becomes more popular in relation to television, an online presence becomes more important for candidates.
As one specific example: look at the primary debates. People can go online and post questions for the candidates. And during the debates, Twitter activity increases. The internet has enabled the campaigns to become more interactive, rather than conducted in one way.
