How has the main sources of domestic energy changed over time?

The first use of energy for domestic purposes was fire many centuries ago. It finally enabled food to be cooked and changed the diets and living habits of people. Domesticated animals could be seen as a form of energy for domestic purposes because they were used to achieve things that had never been possible for people.

Animals were used to lift heavy items, for transporting people and items, pulling ploughs and turning large grindstones to make things like flour. This allowed people to move food from different locations, allowing towns to be separated and allowing less people to be employed in other causes.

Coal and coal gas were the next major advancements in energy supply for domestic use being burnt in houses to run ovens and heating water etc. Coal gas was a good source of light with coal gas lanterns generating enough light to allow people to stay up later and get more done.

Electricity is the most common form of domestic energy used today and is the most efficient and easy to use type of energy. Electricity can be used to power almost anything in a domestic setting and is created most commonly by coal or other fossil fuels. It can also be generated by utilising the power of water, nuclear energy and natural gas/oils to turn turbines and create electricity. Fossil fuels are used to heat water into steam which turns turbines, that in turn move a generator.
