Major advances in Air travel over the last 100 years have allowed for people to travel 100s if not 1000s of times faster intercontinentaly.
Advances in engine technology have also greatly improved the performance of cars and other motor vehicles, such as trains and boats.
Cars were relatively new 100 years ago, bicycles were still not used for travel in most cases because they were too delicate, Air travel was extremely new and still in the experimental phase as airplanes had just been invented and airships (like zeppelins and blimps) were a very newly commercialized technology.
Travel would have mostly been done by train or boat when going long distance and trips could take months.
