There r two main differences between LAN & WAN: 1) network having fast speed at least 10 mbps is called lan while wan has slow speed as 64 kbps. 2) wan connects two lan far apart to each other using wan technologies such as leased lines, internet, frame relay, etc. while lan connects two systems/lans near to each other through ethernet/fast ethernet/gigabit ethernet.

LAN stands for Local Area Network that covers small geographic areas, commonly used in single buildings such as schools, business offices, and homes. LAN has a high data transfer rate and has a 1000 megabits per second high speed capability. LAN can be used wireless or connect to a computer using an Ethernet wire. WAN is an abbreviation for Wide Area Network that can cover a larger geographic area. The internet is used internationally and is considered the world's largest WAN. International banks and larger corporations such as hotels, Cable Television companies or even restaurants are examples of organizations that use WAN. Unfortunately, WAN has a less speed capacity of 150 megabits per second and a lower data transfer rate. WAN uses MPLS, ATM, and Frame Relay to connect. LAN is more secure than WAN which is likely to receive threats. LANs are inexpensive compared to WANs. LAN can be controlled, managed and owned by a single organization or person. Wan exist under distributed or collective ownership and managed over a long distance.

Both area network connections can be made via telephone system and able to use any personal computer platform. WANs are needed for the LANs to connect to public networks. LANs can connect through lease lines and satellites to create a WAN. In a way both networks can use each other to make technology easier to use these days.

A LAN (local area network) is a data communications network that connects personal computers within a very limited area. A WAN (wide area network) covers a large area and usually consists of several smaller networks using private or public network transports. LAN and WAN have many differences. One of the differences is speed. The maximum speed of a LAN can be up to 1000 megabits per second while WAN can only go up to 150 megabits per second. Second, to connect to LAN, all you would need is a network interface (NIC), a switch and a hub. On the other hand with a WAN, you would need a modem and a router. While LAN uses the Ethernet networking technology and uses Wi-Fi standard in applications that require wireless access, WAN uses the T1 standard. LAN also has greater bandwidth which helps to reduce traffic rate. WAN has a lower bandwidth which increases the rate of traffic and are prone to security risks.

One of the similarities that LAN and WAN share are that they both use the ring and the star topologies. The ring topology connects all services in a circle with each device having exactly two neighbors. Data is transmitted from one device to another around the ring. The star topology feature a Central connection point that links cables or handles wireless broadcasts to all workstations and peripherals. The second is that both of them have a communications protocol meaning that they have a set of rules for efficiently transmitting data from one network node to another.

Hi,

According to my view, LAN is generally the network of all the computers connected to one router, while WAN is the network of all the computers connected to routers and switches, just more than one router.

You will get more information from Wanos.co.

Thank you
