Between that and Buddhism's belief in no gods, lead to a decline in popularity there. In Modern times Buddhism is flourishing again. Many of the dailits (outcast caste) are becoming Buddhists.

Around 800 AD the Islamic Religion conquered India which included Nepal. They created the Mogul Empire. The Koran tells it's believers to kill all atheists. As Dar al Islam saturated the whole of India the Buddhists and their religious places were destroyed. Hindoos were not considered atheists so they were allowed to become a subservient people and pay a head tax rather than be exterminated. By the time England took over India the previously large Buddhist population was pretty much completely exterminated. There were some remnants left who disguised themselves as a sect of Hindu called Vedanta. The Buddhists never regained independent standing and never grew in India or Nepal after their utter obliteration.
