Spectral analysis is a procedure in which a light source is shone through a lens to reveal its components. Light created by different methods have different spectral components, which act like a fingerprint. For example, if you examine the spectrum of a distant star, the different wavelengths will show you what different elements comprise that star.

At a more detailed scientific level, the individual lines are determined by the amount of energy lost by a particular atom's electrons as they move between energy levels. Each energy level of an atom's electron shell is characteristic to that atom. When an electron moves from a higher energy level to a lower one, there is a release of energy in the form of a photon, and that photon's wavelength is determined by the amount of energy change, resulting in a spectrographic line characteristic to that atom.

The spectral type of a star measure?

The spectral type of a star is what measures its chemical composition. The visible light that bounces off of it can be used to determine the composition.

What is a line spectrum used for?

The line spectrum is usually used to sort out the atomic fingerprint as the gas emit light at very specific frequencies when exposed to the electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic waves are usually displayed in form of the spectral lines.

Why is light an important tool used in astronomy?

Stars are the sources of light. If they did not emit light, there would be no stars and thus no astronomy.

What is brand analysis used for?

Brand analysis is the procedure on comprehensively collecting qualitative and quantitative information from all available sources and assessing it to determine the state and perception of a particular brand. Brand analysis is used alongside competitor analysis and target analysis in order to make decisions which will maximise the financial benefit of the brand without sacrificing reputation.
