Many people are woefully uneducated about the first world war, possibly because the second world war had such huge impact upon the twentieth century. However, World War I impacted everyone. First of all, over 37 million lives were lost, and those losses coupled with the emotional wounds and sense of displacement of the 'Lost Generation, impacted future generations and future wars. It's questionable if there would have even been a second world war were it not for the Treaty of Versailles. The United States went to war with Britain as an ally for the first time since the French and Indian war.
WWI sets up the events for WWII, as in Hitler's rise to power, fascism, etc. The United States comes into WWII fighting on two fronts, Europe and Asia, which catapults the US into an economic powerhouse. The US emerges from WWII as a superpower (with nuclear weapons) and perspective of being 'the good guys'. Cold War develops between US and USSR leading to a policy preemptive measures and other outlying conflicts, i.e Korea and Vietnam, to counteract the opponents. This leads to a generation American politicians with a 'world police' perspective. September 11 and a 'we're the good guys' mentality becomes justification enough to invade other nations, such as Afghanistan and Iraq, with an idealized goal of 'safer & better world'. The US in now unfortunately stuck because the 'good guys' won't leave a nation they invaded to make a 'better place' until the job is done.
There are no surviving US Veterans of World War 1 now. Think about it most of them were born in 1899. They would be 111 years old if they were alive today.
