If your talking about gestation time it's about 11 months, give or take a few weeks. If your talking about how long is the birthing process it shouldn't take longer than a few hours once labor has started in earnest.
Horses are prey animals, and in the wild they need to give birth fast and recover even faster, in order to stay ahead of preditors. They foal must stand, nurse, and be able to run with the herd in a very short time. So a horse that is taking too long to foal may need the vet. Keep your vet's number close at hand. Things can and do go wrong, but most mares give birth without human help and do just fine.
And finally, if your talking about how old a mare should be before becoming a mother, that depends on the mare and on what you do with her. Some people that are showing their mare may put off breeding in favor of a show career. But age-wise the best age to breed your mare is after her 5th birthday and before her 15th for a first time breeding.

The Banks pony, also called the Shackleford Banks Pony is named after the series of barrier islands they live on. They have been there for a long time and are considered a feral or semi-feral breed. They have genetic markers for specific types of Iberian blood which means they are descendants of the original horses brought to the New World.
