It was about a year between the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill and the influx of gold miners to California. Documents written by a person who found the gold are dated in 1848. The gold rush to California did not start until 1849.

What did John Sutter start in California in 1848?

John Sutter came to California with a Mexican land grant and built a fort in what is now the city of Sacramento. He also built a saw mill a little further north. He was an interesting man and really saw a lot of California history as well as made a bit. When John C Fremont and his crew captured the Mexican governor to declare the Bear Flag Republic they took him to Sutter to keep. At that point Sutter had to throw his "lot" in with the Americans. In the spring of 1848 one of his men John Marshall found gold in the trace at the saw mill. Marshall was able to keep the secret for a bit, but when more was found the cry of "Eurkra"went up and people began to flood the state any way they could get here. Sutter knew he was in trouble with the finding of gold and as a result he lost everything. People came on to his land and there were so many he couldn't stop them. When he died he was a broke man. California became a state on Sept. 9, 1850.

Why was Sacramento choose as the state capital?

When CA became a state in 1850 it was a primary city in the state and had been for several years. John Sutter got a land grant from Mexico to build a fort and that was the central point of entry by settlers. It soon grew into a fairly large city that allowed easy access to San Francisco by using the Sacramento River to the bay and access to the gold fields. When John C. Fremont and his men took the Mexican governor hostage they took him to Sutter's Fort in Sacramento and declared the Bear Flag Republic. Fremont had made a deal with Sutter that when the republic was declared he would be able to keep his fort and land. What no one counted on was the gold rush 2 years later. Sutter lost everything in the gold rush, but Sacramento was still an important city for the state.
