On January 24, 1848, gold was discovered by James Marshall while building a sawmill for Capt. John Sutter (Sutter's Mill), Coloma, California. John Marshall discovered gold flakes in the traces of the mill. Before that, James Wilson Marshall was a carpenter and sawmill operator.

Sutter tried to stop it from getting out but a San Francisco newspaper ran a headline "Eureka, Gold Found" about the discovery and soon 10,000 a day were arriving in the area. Over 300,000 people came to the state in the two years after the news. They were broadly referred to as 49'ers. CA became a state in 1850 and Sutter lost everything; he lost his fortune, mill, and ended up a broke unhappy man.

The story of the California Gold Rush had such an impact on the United States the question deserves a full answer. John Sutter emigrated from Switzerland in 1834 and New York City was his destination. Sutter was able to join the Santa Fe trade group. Through several measures of cleverness, he was able to have Mexico grant him a land grant in the Sacramento Valley. In 1843, he built a fort to enclose a village of shops, homes, and small manufacturing companies. "Sutters Fort" stood at the end of the California Trail used by pioneers heading into California. From location he earned money selling supplies.Emigration continued to grow, so Sutter built a sawmill to supply newcomers with lumber. From these profits, he built a water powered sawmill on the American River. Sutter assigned a James W. Marshall to supervise the mill. Marshall was constructing a water wheel and on January 24, 1848, he discovered gold.

News spread rapidly and before long the California Gold Rush began. This brought thousands of people from the eastern US to seek their fortunes.
