The first Mexicans to be in the US did not move at all. They already lived in lands that were transferred from Mexico to the US as a result of the Mexican War, or indirectly as a result of Texas' separation from Mexico and subsequent entry as the State of Texas.

Well the only way to proove your power is to show how much land, money, and people you have. Well Texas would soon have all of that, but now to show that you own it you must live on it, because back then you could not conquer land, claim it, and not live on it or somebody would take it. So it was to show power and gain land to control as a newly formed Country.
