That is a good question. I really don't think the Mormons have really felt safe. There are people who still are prejudiced against the Mormons.
Another answer:
The members of the LDS Church (Mormons) kept going from one place to another facing persecution. There were many times they thought they had finally found safety (like Navoo), but would end up having some members killed and the rest chased out of the area. So they went west: facing the weather, wild animals, until they got to about where Salt Lake City, Utah is now. Once to Salt Lake City they felt relatively safe. They did have some problems once in a while (the government sent troops at one point that camped outside Salt Lake City and threatened the people but eventually left). There is still persecution the LDS members face throughout the world, but as a whole it is not as bad as the original members faced. The biggest issue now days is often dealing with untrue beliefs about the LDS Church and how people treat the members because of those beliefs. Occasionally someone will get beat up or killed for being a member of the LDS Church. There also other places where there have been times it has been safer to be LDS (Ireland during the Protestant and and Catholic riots that took place)
