For my DE filter (with the tentacles) I usually let it soak in the muratic acid solution for no more than a day or two. Any longer may cause a little damage to the seals on the tip of each tentacle. There are granulated cleansers that work well too. Just dissolve the granuals in a 5-gallon pail about a third full of water. Place the tentacles in and fill with water to brim of bucket. Let it soak for a day or two. Supposed to be healthier for the tentacles. Works for me.

If you can get a container that will hold the whole length of the filter cartridge fill it with water and 1/4 acid then leave the filter in it over night it should be fine in the morning. if you can only get a container half the height then you will have to do it in two stages.

Very carefully. Follow the manufacturers directions. I am guessing you are cleaning calcium deposits on a DE filter. I would assume that you would dilute the acid with clean water (pouring the acid slowly into the water and not water into acid) and pour enough to cover all of the grids. Then soak over night.
