... Depends on the circumstances probably. If the betrayal was huge (your spouse just revealed that he has a whole other family in another state), then maybe it will never happen. If the betrayal was smaller (your best friend ditched you to go out with a guy), maybe not very long. I think that a lot of thought has to go into trusting someone again. It isn't so much a matter of time as a matter of... is the person deserving of your trust? No one should ever walk back into an abusive situation thinking "this time it will be okay" ... maybe if there has been extensive counseling and behavior therapy... but you don't just try to solve the same problems in the same way and expect things to be different. That is not to say we shouldn't be forgiving and compassionate towards others... we should. But forgiveness and risking your own safety (emotional OR physical), or the safety of children are totally different things. You can learn to love and forgive people while still keeping yourself safe, and recognizing that there is a problem.

No, good friends should not betray you and should be honest; loyal and reliable. However, people are only human and can make a mistake, but as long as they apologize and learn from that mistake then you should learn to forgive them because you are not perfect either. Example: If a friend of yours is bullied or threatened to betray you they are afraid and may well go through the betrayal. Another example: If you told your friend a secret and trusted in their honesty and loyalty and they told someone else this is sad to see, but your friend made a mistake and if they apologize then you should accept the apology and be a little more aware of what you do tell them until you can trust them again.
