Mexico has been a republic since 1823. From 1864 to 1867 it briefly became an Empire, when the French installed a puppet regime led by Maximilian I during the Second Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867).

Ever since, Mexico has been and still is, a Federal Representative Republic, such as the United States of America is.

It has run almost uninterrumpted since 1823, when Mexico established itself as a federal republic. The only two times such form of government was changed included 1836-1837 (to a centralist republic) and later in 1864-1867 when French occupation forces installed Emperor Maximilian to rule over Mexico.
