what is the weight of a sq of 3 tab and a sq of arutectural shingles
Laminates are asphalt based. Laminate just means that you have two layers laminated together to give you more of a "3D" look like cedar shakes. Your laminate shingle is a better shingle over the legacy 3-tab shingle. For the reason that it's all one, solid shingle. Less likely to lift in high wind. Plus, your higher life shingles are generally laminate style shingles(30yr, 40yr, & 50yr).
A 3 tab shingle used to be rated at 15 years. Depending on your region you will may or may not get 15 years. For instance Texas residents will be doing good to get 80% of advertised ratings. Lavezzo Construction

Complete instructions should be included on the shingle package, but essentially what you will be doing is placing the top of the new shingle against the bottom edge of the old shingle, assuming the exposure of the shingles is the same.
3 tab will have a 20 year rating vs 30 year for the shadowline products. Beyond that it's a personal preference based on looks.
